2 Factor Authentication (2FA) is an extra layer of security for logging in that is required for all LVL accounts. 2FA is more secure because it requires two sources of verification to identify you: something only you know (your password) and something only you have (your phone). Having either one of these does not allow access, both are required. This makes it much more difficult for others to access your account.
Traditional 2FA
Other services verify your device by texting you with an SMS code each time you log in. You’re probably familiar with these annoying login codes, but did you know that they are actually insecure? Each year, accounts are compromised when SMS codes are stolen in a process called sim jacking.
LVL Device 2FA
LVL uses Device 2FA. Instead of texting a code to your phone, LVL recognizes the phone itself. When you submit your LVL application, including your photo ID, selfie video, and SSN number, LVL also records a unique device ID for your phone. Once your application is approved, the device ID is verified as a second factor for your account. Each time you log in the device is automatically recognized. That means no SMS codes and no sim jacking.
